Upgrade your calipers!
Words & pictures by Stig; with additional information supplied by forum members.

You know that feeling when the levers back to the bars, the corner's looming at a pace you'd rather not still be doing; then the gut feeling that maybe you've overdone it? Thats the time you wish you'd already upgraded with the help of the following info!

The ones to avoid!

wrong bolt layout

Radial calipers have a bolt centre of 108mm and will NOT fit!

Check out the others below. Theres an obvious difference. The radials have the bolt holes vertically whereas the others below are horizontal.

external link pipe

Taken from the YZF1000R Thunderace. Yes they will fit but check out the link pipe joining the two halves of the caliper (bottom left of image).

These still give good feedback and would be an improvement of OEM but are not as efficient as the monoblock style below.

These are the desirable items!
steel pistons
alloy pistons
steel pistons

OK, so whats the difference?...the gold spots have a fancy coated alloy piston which helps it retract easier. Due to this they're also the ones that weigh the least overall.

What will they fit? ....all models of FZR, YZF750, Thunderace, Vmax that have the 100mm hole centres fixing points.

Altering the fork bottoms (when required)

slight adjustment req'd

Rf9rider was kind enough to be the pioneer for this alteration on his YZF750 at the time. Luckily for you, he's also done a full 'HOW TO' guide that we've hosted in the Workshop Section

Why buy new?

bit of time & patience

Don't give up if you can't afford new. The caliper to the left was one of a pair purchased in the condition shown. Roll your mouse over the image to see what half hours work and a bit of patience makes!

And yes, they are the same pads!!

TIP! - If you're going to buy from ebay and are tempted to buy 2 seperate items (ie. not a pair), make sure you buy the right hand (sat on the bike) caliper first, as these tend to be rarer than the left side; due to the right hand item being sought after for use on machines with single discs.!
