USA - Vintage Yamaha Rally '20 - Preparations

Post by kboehringer »

FZR Friends,
I haven't posted here in a while between job changes, other bikes, and COVID it's been a little hectic.

I sincerely hope that all my friends across the pond are doing well and only dealing with minor complications due to the COVID.

Our area of the USA (Georgia/Southeast US) is not back to normal but the numbers of new cases are down significantly and most everyone is properly following the appropriate guidelines..... even the idiots! There is a small amount of a return to normalcy.

As a result, our Annual Vintage Yamaha Rally held in North Carolina is on as scheduled this coming week. We will be taking all the necessary precautions and limiting social distances, etc. Our non-riding activities will be modified significantly but will still occur. Unfortunately, we have many great friends in Canada that are restricted from crossing the border and will not be able to attend.

I'm preparing my FZR for the rally (as well as my FJ1200 and an XS1100). Tried to do a little "touch-up today of the rear of the tank where the previous owner had placed an obnoxious decal. The results were better than when I started but not the stellar job I was hoping for.

Thanks to Nuggitt, I have acquired the missing rear seat cover. Yet another nice piece from the UK!!!! Thank you again John!!!

I had another seat repaired so that I could quickly swap seats (one with and the other without the rear cover). Almost a shame to cover up this nice stitching..

Unfortunately, the seat came without the "BUM STOP" so I had to fabricate one:

My Seat specialist was far too busy so I tried to cover it myself....NOT IMPRESSIVE but functional.....

THE CHALLENGE!
One of my friends has challenged me to a bit of a race at the rally...... His VMax against my FZR. Unfortunately, I don't believe my friend understands just how well and FZR corners and accelerates compared to his 10 Ton BRICK. Even in a straight line HE HASN'T A CHANCE. In the corners (as planned) all he will be seeing (for an extremely short period of time) is my tail lamp...

I'll let you know how the race goes.... I don't expect much of a contest... :D

Again, HOPE YOU ARE ALL DOING WELL!!

Hi Kurt, impressed by your attention for detail and hope the Vmax story ends well.
They ARE good in a straight line, so be mindful where you accept to 'review' respective abilities.
Keep us posted!
Second wave appears to be hitting us in the UK at present.
Stay safe, stay well.
Above all, stay in front.

Hello. I am of the same opinion as you Nuggit, with the right rider they are quick, rejetted they are almost unstoppable. However I saw a video online of a drag race between the vmax and a an exup (I think it might be a genesis can't remember). The exup beat the vmax by what looks to be about one bike length so its close. Sorry can't remember the link but I typed in Fzr1000 sound ( I wanted to hear how loud other bikes where - I have mine down to 87 - 90 db - not pleased but want to pass the mot ). Within the search was the drag race - worth looking at.
Well I'll be .....

I got it wrong, the video I saw was a genesis against a hyabusa turbo on you tube. The genesis won but having thought about it the hyabusa must have been having a bad day. Not to put the genesis down but at 1360 plus cc and a turbo the hyabusa should see off most bar a proper drag bike. Shouldn't it?
