I'm new to the forum and I only ever went on the back of an EXUP around 1990 and always wanted to have one but I went down the off road route instead.
Anyway, I've just bought me my first one and shes sat in my garage its a 1989 red white and blue that had been sat in someone's garage for years and years and its full of dust! Fuel drained and carbs cleaned and she fired up no problem!
Its only got 20K on it and still has original exhaust on it so I am like a kid at Christmas now! I will try to post a picture when I have given it a quick wash!
I have read an article on cleaning/servicing the EXUP valve so thats a job for me to try and have a go at along with a service and MOT!
Is there anything else that I need to do or look at?
At that sort of milage there shouldn't be too much wrong keep an eye on the fork and brake seals if it's been sat that long and don't worry too much if it uses a bit of oil as most of them do. Just keep it topped up to the top of the sight glass to stop the light coming on
There's a d/l Yamaha manual in the tech section on the main site if you need it!
consider blue spot brake and M/C conversion plus shorter suspension links (dog bones) to stop you running wide on corners, particularly if you have a 180 rear tyre fitted

Just had it running for 10 mins but does seem a little spluttery sometimes to around 3500 rpm
Echoing Stig's comment re: oil level.....keep it topped as it's not very entertaining at high speed when light goes on!

Mine splutters when it's been stood for some time (which is always )
Last time it wouldn't clear the carbs had a total strip with the help of Nuggitt & Roadrunner
Conclusion at the time suggested it may have been a partially blocked idle circuit/ air screw issue
Btw, if you need emulsion Toobs and needles I have a set in stock and I also have stainless dog bones available
Has anyone come up with a fuel additive that helps clear carbs without need to strip if they are even slightly blocked with gum if left for a long time?

Just been out on it to the MOT station and she's passed with flying colours - The rear brake is binding slightly but thats all he could say about it!
It drove nice but felt really heavy round corners and pushing BUT the guy checked the tyre pressures for me and they were 18 psi. What a difference the ride home was!!

Ooh that's very nice and in my favourite colour too. How do find these bikes that have been tucked away in the back of a shed or garage for donkeys years? I can never seem to bloody find one.
Bit of advice. Buy a good bed and a good pair of shoes, because if you aren't in one you'll be in the other.
