The "black band" on the face of the clutch cover is actually part of the seal that seperates the parts of the cover.

ah right, i was wondering about taking that cover off, might just seperate all the components behind it and send it like that...cheers creed!

in other developments, engine will be silver, water pump/oil feed/tensioner/all metal cooler pipes and components - all will be painted black, the hoses will be an unknown colour possibly orange to match bike or maybe blue?

now i gotta get that damn bolt out from the frame-chop...i need a blowtorch and some welding gear :D

Current rear end

What the rear end will look like (the "groin" bit of the tail unit is too high and too forwards in pic, but gives an idea)

Polishing

Post by creedxup »

You might want to re-think polishing the coolant link pipes, they're steel and will rust really quickly even if they are given a mirror finish.

Im gonna try to get the coolant pipes painted in a metalic colour to stand out from the black engine.

Today i have been mostly removing all the glassy crap off of all 20valves. Ill need to take some to work to weigh accuratly. But according to my digital scale at home the stock valves are 24g exhaust, with all the crap on them they were all 26g...thats a lot, almost 10% heavier!

Pics when i get off my phone.

Put the valve stem in a drill, spin it up and run a blade up and down the stem to get rid of the carbon build up, you can get rid of carbon on the valve face this way as well, but the Letters are raised on the face so you can't get them perfectly clean.

cheers creed, ill give that a try as it seems easier than trying to clean out that crap from the recessed "3GM" area than it is doing it with my bench grinder...

im about halfway through turning this...

...into this:-

in that last image, for 3 of the exhaust valves, i have managed to get rid of the crap in the recessed middle...that photo above was taken before i worked out how to remove the deposit...

they were that caked in crap (also it looks almost fibrous?) that i though the exhaust valves had some ceramic coating that i was destroying for a second...

also i have been able to (by applying a good deal of heat, and by cutting 2 flats in the bolt) to remove 1 of 3 stuck exhaust bolts, will give the other 2 a go tomorrow, so far ive not set anything on fire (other than excess WD40) with my blowtorch :D

think my dynojet needles might be worn, this is the measurements i get...

Image
ive emailed DJ to find out if they are worn, if they are i should be able to get them replaced gratis...

i will probably change the emulsion tubes as well just to be on the safe side, is it ok to use factory pro emulsion tubes with DJ needles, or should i use DJ needles with OEM emulsion tubes, or are the factory pro needles and tubes the best for our bikes?

bike is likely to be used in the mid to high rpm range as its gonna be a pleasure bike, im not bothered about mpg, but i will need it to fuel properly at low rpm as its not a track-orientated build.

thoughts please people :D

I've found it's best to use standard needles, tubes and jets.

I don't know about the factory pro tubes, I have a set but I've never fitted them, I think they're more popular in America

so the mass purchases that, i think its stig who does them, they are the standard tubes and needles?

ill pick up a varied selection at some point, when the bike is all sorted and run in it will be down to the dyno to get the best possible mapping done, we can try a load of different combinations then to see whats best, TBH im looking for good midrange more than anything else, but as long as it fuels properly thats fine for me, anything else is a bonus.

still waiting for a reply from DJ UK, i am intending to put everything back to standard for when i run the engine in, my only concern is the can. its got a freeflowing carbon can at the moment...does anyone know how "restrictive" the original can was?

its also got a k&n air filter, so ill put that back to a standard filter too for the run in.

excellent, when funds come through ill be asking for a set when you do a group buy :D

DJ UK said to send the needles up to them for appraisal, i will see if they change them...they seem worn/odd to me so lets see what they say.

do you stig, or creed etc, know how restrictive the original exhaust was, i will put the fuelling back to standard for my rebuild, but as i dont have an original can, only a free-flowing aftermarket one, i want to be able to set it up as close to how it was designed to be.

i will take it out to a stage 1 tune once everything up and running, and probably leave it there, i doubt i will ever have funds to go to stage 3.

The standard EXUP exhaust is not too restrictive, they riled on the valve for a lot of the back pressure and noise reduction, the EXUP will run fine with a race can and no other modifications, this would suggest that the original end can flows quite well.
