The rebirth of a 1990 fzr1000
Re: The rebirth of a 1990 fzr1000
I had a similar melting plug issue at the headstock. 2 wires touched within the block connector creating a live circuit. Result was bike wouldn’t turn off even with the key removed

Re: The rebirth of a 1990 fzr1000
Reminds me of a ford diesel runaway i experienced when i was 19 working at a fast lube. I had no idea what was going on, even handed the keys to my boss who was horrified as the engine pumped black smoke into the waiting room.
I got the diaphragm's in the grooves yesterday and put the caps on to hold them there so hopefully i can pop the springs and o-rings in today and throw the carbs on. Oil is showing up today so if all goes to plan i might crank on the engine.
Ive been stripping the 90 to remove the engine, and to my surprise its not locked up ! It makes compression as well but i have zero trust in it because of that oil line being broken off.

Re: The rebirth of a 1990 fzr1000
Well i got everything ready to try and start it, but both the battery's im trying to revive are thoroughly done so had to order one in.
It should be here Wednesday or Thursday so i'll have a leisure few days removing the engine from the 90.

Re: The rebirth of a 1990 fzr1000
Yes but im in no rush. Plenty of other things to do, such as pull the #1 floatbowl and inspect the needle/seat/replace with one robbed from the donor rack if necessary.
It cooled off to the 80's today so i got started on a important house project. If rain rolls in i'll go back to the bike.

Re: The rebirth of a 1990 fzr1000
Well i'll be getting creative with the coil pack air dam tomorrow, some plug leads will have to be shortened. I got a little greedy and kept trying.

My bike tries to start like that after it’s been stood a long while. It’s almost like it’s choked up

Re: The rebirth of a 1990 fzr1000
Well this one has been stood up for a decade +. And other than cleaning the carbs i did the bare minimum to get it going. The best of 4 plugs from 2 different engines, no trimming of the plug lead that pulled out of the end, no checking coils/leads beforehand. I think a coil isnt working, at least that what it sounds like to me. Hopefully i have enough bits and pieces for a proper start up today.

Re: The rebirth of a 1990 fzr1000
Found a issue. Then tested the coils, leads and ends. 2 ends were out of spec, luckily the 2 spare that i had were in spec.
Trimmed the ends of the leads back 1/2 inch and the wires are still corroded.
QUESTION: Is there a coil on plug swap common to these bikes? If not what is a worthy coil/lead upgrade?
Then a nice way to end the day.

Mind you the plugs were the best of 8, 20 years old and seen better days. Im just overjoyed to hear no concerning noises, but that doesnt meen im out of the woods yet. I still need to inspect the entire timing chain. Anyone need some 91 parts?

I agree. Ive been in limo over this engine for a few years. Todays goal. Drop the engine and roll the shell into the car trailer.

Re: The rebirth of a 1990 fzr1000
Kind of a update. Bought some rubber, but the yamaha rubber is backordered til the 26th. Hopefully its truly available as its the carb rubbers that were majorly cracked, and all the o-rings/bearings for the cooling system. I did take the cam cover off for a quick look at the chain and it looks fine. Im influenced by a thread on here that's about 3 years old where a member lost a cam chain as a result of the bike sitting and the chain getting rusty. Once the parts arrive i'll put the engine on the bench and get back to work on the bike.
