As to the viscosity with UK conditions I don't think it does any harm either.
I've used it in my older (1980s) bikes for years and never had a problem. I did try semi synthetic in an early gsxr1100 and it used much more than the mineral.
All down to design/ manufacturing tolerances/ available oil technology at the design stage I suppose.

there's a school of thought that says oil is millions of years old so does anyone take any notice of shelf life etc......best before......use by.....expiry or do u rely on seeing what it looks like before topping up or using the "oil I bought years ago just in case"?!!!!! .....u know who u are

Whatever you use, only take it from a sealed container. That's true of other liquids as well.
I did some fairly extensive research a few years ago & ended up reading a blog from a bloke in the States who had a pretty exhaustive [sorry] technical approach which finally resulted in him recommending Shell Rimula R6-LM. Designed for diesel trucks, it has many advantages for bikes, including the stability of combustion particulates, which radically extends periods between changes. Although initially expensive, I've found it to be easily half the price , when considering doubling the change mileage. Add to this EXUP's natural use, topping-up reintroduces more, fresh oil & there you have it. Mine does not smoke at all & when I do change it, it still looks in good shape.
Aye, that's true, but this one meets the criteria in all respects. It was of course a consideration, which he'd made clear in the blog. I'll try to dig it up from somewhere, but it was many years/PCs ago...
ive been using Castrol power 1 which seems pretty good, also used Halfords own brand in the past ,usually wait till they have got a sale on and buy a few, never had any problems with it
Thought I would add to this. I am running a 2001 Fazer 1000 & a 1987 FZ750. I topped the oil up on both bikes using Motul 4T 5000 10w/40 a few weeks ago as they both drink a bit. Mate borrowed the Fazer & I rode my FZ. Both clutches slipping when full beans given after the top up, fine before. It's JASO spec & specifically for bikes but I'm wondering why they were fine before I topped up as I'm fairly certain this is the oil I use to service both bikes.. .

Motul 5000 4T is specifically for bikes and meets JASO MA2 spec so is problem really oil related?

New clutch fitted to the Fazer November last year, FZ is actually a FZR1000 engine but good clutch fitted to that too. Not a single problem with either until I topped the oil up..

I used Motul 5000 for many years, no problems.
One of our members used to recommend Wilko mineral oil which apparently reduced consumption without any side effects.
I assume just enough to fill sight glass without overfilling?
