At the moment its a toss-up between your wheels and exupfreak's

dont go down the wheel tape route unless you get it lacqured over, the photos dont show it very well but it gets tatty real quick !!!.

Thought about that kiwi, and laquer seems to be the answer,other than that,a clever masking job using the axel,string and stanley knife for a perfect finish,and do a spray on version, Or is that going too far?

no thats not going too far (in my humble opinion), in fact i think it would work really well.
