Last year I bought a set of Alpine ear plugs nd I have been very pleased with their performance with one minor flaw. They cancel out the wind noise and rattle from engine/drivetrain excellent but you can still hear the engine roar(if you have a slip-on) and other motorists screaming and honking.
Unfirtunately they have a pin in the middle sticking out and sometimes the helmet touches the pin and they move, cancelling the dampening effect.

So I bought some Noizezz earplugs. these are really musician earplugs, they come with different dampening effect and you get a set of four different sizes so they fit well. I chose the -30db kind. They fit well aftet you find your size and no pin is poking out but the dampening effect is nada. I'm not sure if mine are faulty or something but I might as well ride without plugs as use these. Also, they are a damn right bitch to get out of the ears. Don't buy 'em.

I always ride with ear plugs, even on a short journey.
I have always used the 3M E-A-Rsoft SNR 36 Yellow Things.
For me they are a comfortable fit and don't touch the inside of the helmet like the pin types (as you described).

I wear ear plugs and it makes for a more relaxed ride I think. I have too wear them at work.(Quarry Supervisor) I have changed the type of plugs we use there to the ones I use on the bike. 
There was a test done some years back about the decibel level inside lids. Their findings were that on average the noise level inside a crash helmet is equivalent to a jumbo jet on take off. The more vents on a lid also raises the level.
I don't use them on a short trip to the shops, but when going from Guildford to St Neots to see the parents I definitely do.
