side stand for replaced dogbones

Post by fang »

Just been reading through, like you do, and found the TDM stand thread.

Here is what I've done

Image

Block attached with two 5mm stainless bolts after tapping sidestand "foot",
will measure and take better pics if required!

Removes the feeling that you may return to your bike doing a "dead horse" impression!

Also makes it possible for my stick like frame to lift it off the sidestand without shitting myself with strain!!

Right heres the general method, had a block of aluminium knocking about the garage, 40mm x 25mm x 20mm (approx) LxWxH so thought I would mount it to the bottom of my side stand, which is OE by the way.

So marked the block and drilled two 5.5mm holes through it, then held this against the bottom of the stand and using an automatic centre punch marked the positions for the threaded holes to be tapped.

Drilled and tapped the bottom of the side stand to accept 5mm bolts.

Next enlarged holes in block to 6.5 mm to half depth so that the allen bolts will sit below the surface.

Assemble the lot and can now leave the bike on its side stand confident that it will still be standing when I return :D

A neat solution there fella. Well done

On the subject of needing a longer stand... Has anyone on here engineered a custom side stand? I need one for my Streetfighter as this solution won't work for mine, since my stand is now 45-50mm too short

I was tyhinking along the lines of a stand off anoth Yam....probably from an off roader coz of the height.

I originally thought of the TDM 850 as the stand would be long enough and have to support a heavish bike BUT..............

Plodder bought one to try and the spring mount was in the wrong position

It was a no go....so the search goes on :(

Will see what I can come up with then :ninja: :unibrow:

Who else would be interested? We could do a group buy.

If it was adjustable, that would be best IMO.

I have a CNC machinist who makes my custom parts for SRD... I usually just do the designs, but I can mill and turn too, so I tend to make 1offs, whereas he does batches for me :D Will dig out some piccies of stuff he's done for me and post them in the Gallery :D

The easy answer is just be careful how you park it. It won't fall over but if the bike's on a camber you might never get it upright again.
Keep on keepin' on.

My bike falls over without a piece of 2x2" under the stand

I have a different back end which means the swingarm point / stand mounting point sits even higher on mine

you could get some 20mm bar drill one end about 5 times nice tight clearance holes . Then cut of the attatchments spring holder etc form origional stand and weld them on . Finally get some 22mm or 7 eights tube drill it like the bar and make up a foot section outta some flat bar get it all chromed and put it on the mantlepiece    might work tho mb i make one for mine :)

ive done an extension job on a stand before with a heavy bike like these it pays to weld a brace between the two cos stands flex a lot . I only mentioned using tube and bar with holes so that it would be ajustable which is what the man was after i think ? : :)
