Thanks for letting me in. Im a Marine stationed in Japan and came across a 1990 FZR with just 13k kilometers. Im eager to get riding and tinkering. I guess my first order of business is the R1 caliper swap and possibly removing the rubber "restrictor" in the intake couplers (can't think of proper nomenclature).
You found this FZR in Japan? I though they had engine size restrictioins there...
Regarding the intake rubbers, not sure you have the restrictors, as this was specific for the 100HP versions (such as in France, but maybe also in other countries, I don't know for sure...).
But it is true that getting unrestricted rubbers changes dramatically the engine behaviour! I know, I am French and got it unrestricted! (I've got a '89 model, same as yours but not as nice).
It's easy to see if you have the intake restrictors. Just lift the carbs and look for the rubber webs. 5 minutes with a Stanley knife and you have instant power gain.
Mine is a 90 UK model and it had the restrictive webs until I bought it. I purchased the bike from Chesterfield Motorcycles in 99 and it was their mechanic that removed them prior to it being offered for sale
Irony is the very first owner sold the bike when 6 months old and bought a jet ski instead as the bike in restricted form was too fast and scared him
Had my webs removed by Granby (remember them?) in Derby at first service of my new 96 Foxeye. Screaming Jesus did that bike shift?
We had a few fast bikes on rideouts in the early days. Dave59's heavily modded R1 silhouette for example. Ted's red tyres. Kev's 750/1000 bastard YZF. Apologies for not mentioning everyone, but you know who you are.

Yes sir, in Japan. I think there are restrictions on size based on your license type. But I'm guessing as a service member I'm basically bypassing that.
