Bike starting with clutch in or out?

The place to come to share your technical expertise, or just find out what the little springy thing is that's just pinged out of sight under the work-bench.

clutch in or out, side stand folded or down, on neutral = start

clutch in and side stand folded in gear = start

On side stand and in gear = NO start

I don't remember what the right or wrong way is as I removed both the clutch lever & sidestand switches when I first bought the bike in '91. never been in favour of those things.

They were also the first things to go in the bin when I bought the R1 & the FJ1200
Bikes-they're in the blood.
