So, I'm off to France tomorrow.
Just booked my ferry.
1800 miles, 8 days, 1 tankbag.
22.15 Portsmouth - St Malo ferry. (Steak, frites, wine.)
Then Tours>Clermont Ferrand>Nimes. Couple of days with my brother.
No motorways or highways. Cross country on departmental roads all the way.
Should be (fast) fun.

Sounding good Teego. Have a fantastic time and please take plenty of photos of everything, well not exactly everything. What you do at night time is your own business.

Just be aware of the police, they're very unforgiving and can confiscate your bike for little reason.

That's why I ride the country roads. Can't be worse than Derbyshire.

They forgave me today
145kph in a 90kph zone. Great sweepers. Tyres a little sloppy on the edge.
I acknowledged his authority, begged forgiveness, in French.
He said now cool it. Next time I'll take your bike and you can walk back to England. Merci Monsieur said I.
Glad he wasn't around when I had to shut down the Merc AMG at 260 k in a 130 zone.

Sorry for the hijack Teego, but speaking of digging a hole.

After seeing the link for The Coldstones Cut I put up the other day.

I took the missus out for the day yesterday and we went to have a look for ourselves.

That is one hell of a hole they are digging out. If they carry on they'll be having a BBQ on Bondi beach soon.

So, I had a good couple of days with my brother at his gaff. Good company, good food, lots of good local wine and SUNSHINE.
Set off for home about 1030 on Saturday. Sadly it was raining so I decided not to use my favourite route - imagine 80 miles of Cat and Fiddle with no cameras. Took a straight(er) road but added 50 miles to my trip. When it rains down there after 3 months of drought it really pisses down.
Dried up later but only got in 250 miles before I found a good hotel with a great restaurant. Couple of other bikers there - German and Austrian.
Set off next morning well refreshed and enjoying the sun.
East of Paris I started looking for somewhere to stay. I had forgotten that northern France is a shithole with no hotels outside the main towns. And it's no fun on a bike shlepping around somewhere the size of Derby at 2000 looking for a room.
So on to Arras where I arrived about 2200. Took a couple of coffees to get my caffeine levels up and decided I can't be arsed to shlep around for a room and if I do get one it'll be too late for a meal.
Fortified with caffeine I thought "sod it" I'll just get to Calais and get on the next boat.
Got to the DFDS desk and asked if I can get a good price on the 0230 ferry. Good lad came back with the Ferrysavers internet price. On the boat, which was almost empty, apart from coachloads of Eastern Europeans (an observation not a complaint) I settled down for more caffeine and a double cognac. Actually I noticed the barman slipped in a third shot for free. Didn't get pissed as I was so charged with coffee, adrenaline and coldness.
Find myself heading out of Dover at 0300 local time. Dark, cold and too many intercontinental trucks. Get onto M25 and hit big tailback where three juggernauts have concertinaed into each other.
Coffee, fuel at dawn at South Mimms services. Then M1 and home.
650 miles non-stop on that last leg, apart from fuel, coffee and ferry.
Total distance in 8 days = 1730.
