Requesting Advice from the Experts - Valve Clearance(s)

Post by englishmatt »

Hello Chaps,

First post, so here goes. I'm here in the USA and I'm restoring a 1990 well neglected EXUP. That said, it's time to check/adjust the valves.

Before the tear down the bike ran fine. I've removed the plugs and they look "perfect". I checked the valves just for sanity sake while the bike is torn down.

Here's the findings:

Cyl 1 EX - .18mm .18mm
Cyl 1 IN - .12mm .12mm .12mm

Cyl 2 EX - .20mm .20mm
Cyl 2 IN - .12mm .12mm .12mm

Cyl 3 EX - .19mm .20mm
Cyl 3 IN - .11mm .12mm .12mm

Cyl 4 EX - .20mm .20mm
Cyl 4 IN - .12mm .12mm .12mm

Question I have is, would you guys adjust these valves or leave as is?

Bike has 56,400 miles, no puffs of smoke, no evidence of Rich or Lean...

Cheers in advance for your advice.

you are on the limit for the intakes and just over the limit on some of the exhaust valves.

as you already have access to the top of the engine i would go one size down on all your exhausts to bring them into spec, so if you find a 1.80mm shim, you go down to a 1.75mm and that will increase your gap by 0.05mm and bring you back into spec.

as its a bit of a ballache to do the shims on these bikes (as its a bucket over shim design) i would maybe be tempted to do the intakes too, or if you can find someone with a surface grinder (or a stock of cheap enough shims) maybe go down one half size, i.e. from a 1.80mm shim you drop to a 1.78mm, or from a 1.75 you drop to a 1.72mm.

that should keep you going for another 30-50k miles :D

I did my shims with the expert help of a good friend last winter and I have a few spare shims if any good to you. I'll dig out the sizes I have when I venture into the garage shortly.

I also bought a few shims from these if you get stuck. Tell them the sizes you want and they'll let you know what they have available.

SHIMS

Here you are Matt these are the spare sizes I have.

1x160
1x170
2x175
2x178
2x180
1x182
2x185
2x188

If you want me to post them over the pond let me know.
Bit of advice. Buy a good bed and a good pair of shoes, because if you aren't in one you'll be in the other.

Cheers for the advice fellas. You confirmed where my head was.

I pulled the EX cam and decided to see what shims where installed. I had a mix of 165s and 170s. So I swapped things about abit and replaced the valves with 170s installed with the 165s.

I just ordered four (4) 160s that will replace the remaining valves that had 165s installed.

That should get me to .23/.25 on all EX valves.

Since the IN valves are IN SPEC, albeit on the small side, I'll leave those this time.

Thank you all very much for the offer to send me some shims, very kind of you. I'm looking forward to contributing to this community.

Cheers, Matt
