Fuel pump issues
Fuel pump issues
Hi I have an issue as my bike starts and ticks over nice then after two mins dies of lack of fuel.
Turn ignition off and on pump primes starts straight off?? 2 mins repeats?
I have no reserve switch would this affect this? Wiring was in a state so I've got everything working but am I missing something ? It's driving me mad

A "stab in the dark".......It's possible it's been wired as if the fuel switch is in the on position as opposed to reserve therefore turning the fuel pump off when the level in the tank goes below the sensor. You can still "force" the pump to prime the carbs when turning on and off and that might be what you are experiencing.
Can you photograph the wiring and post?

I can't send pics but the wiring was a massive mess when I got it but I've got everything working as it should. I have not found the reserve switch wiring yet? I'm looking at that tomorrow.
It runs for about 5 mins cuts out as running out of fuel soon as it stalls it will start up and run again for 5 mins??
I've not had it on the Road yet from its rebuild so only running in the shed and it gets hot and fan kicks in ok so all electrics are working ok. I've got a spare fuel pump so probably try that ?

when you shine a torch in the tank, is the fuel level well above a sensor mounted on the end of a vertical post?

"worked fine last time on the road"......
in that case, keep us posted as I assumed it'd just been wired up and ignitor box "ECU" was turning signal off to pump.......good idea to check spare next though ...good luck

Thinking on......Can anyone confirm if the sender in the tank is connected to the "ECU" or more directly to the fuel pump or via relay?
Cheers

Hi
sort of went through the same series of problems you had as I just bought a exup and it wasn't in the best of conditions and doing it up.
- take the tank off and check the fuel petcock, even check to see if it blocked. I would also do the same with the fuel filter you can even blow through it, and you can tell from the pressure on your hand how bad it is.. Both of mine were blocked pretty badly.
- the next time my reserve switch wiring was lose and was not short circuited together both wires were lose and hanging free. The bike would run for about 2-5 mins then die. Red/black and Red/green wire on my bike.
