CARB REFURB ADVICE NEEDED

Post by BONLY1 »

Just got round to buying full set of needles and tubes (thanks Stig) for my FZR1000RU Foxeye '94 - problem is, having now pulled my carbs apart, they're NOT standard.
Bought the bike as a project several years ago, no history known.
It's been well ridden (thrashed?) with the rider pegs nearly ground away and the standard pipe had a welded portion where it had been grounding.
Enjoyed myself so far, taken far too long, but I'd like to get it running again this year.
The o/e petrol tank was rusty as a rusty thing, so have found a good replacement, nearly new, maybe is.
Carb's obviously need rebuilding and were full of rusty bits.
Here's the problem.... the jets are 60's and 132's across all four units. Needle is hardly tapered at all, very blunt almost same profile form top to bottom. Guessing there's been other mod's I cannot tell as a novice.
Do I go ahead and replace with o/e jets (122.5's?) and the standard needles, or should I just leave alone and put back together as is?
Is it possible to refurb/return to standard after a carb set has been modded?
Am stuck now and don't know what to do next!!!

60 pilots are standard, 132's are probably in there as there is a modded airbox/filter/free flowing can.

i might be wrong, but i think those are dynojet needles, almost no taper with a flat "point" at the end??

DYNOJET

Post by BONLY1 »

Thanks Banner001, that's what I'm guessing and while I've not been able to find/download Dynojet instructions, makes me believe/suspet drilling of certain points was needed for that conversion too.
Reckon that in the absence of more advice I'm going to rebuild these just as I found them and try with the V&H pipe I have at the moment, though I have an o/e pipe too.
Unless I get a standard set of carbs, my new o/e needles and toobs are redundant.

a dyno run is your only real option, get it running ok with your current setup, tweak it "seat of the pants" if you want to play around with various combinations, then get it dyno'd, looking mainly at the air/fuel ratio, should be idealy 13.2:1, once you have a base setting you can see where you are rich/lean and make the necessary adjustments.
