FZR 1000 exup Piston Rings

Post by Gert »

Hi Guys I have a 1989 FZR1000 exup and I am overhauling the engine. I have got new piston rings from Yamaha, but when looking at the top and 2nd ring only the 2nd ring has a mark on it to tell me which way up it goes. Has anyone fitted new rings before and can they tell me which way up the top ring goes as it has no marks on it.
Thanks Gert

Have a very close look at the top ring.
When I did mine the top ring had a R marked on it but it is very faint compared to the lower ring (which is marked RN).
Install them with the marks facing up.

Try looking at it under a strong light and tilting it to see it from all angles.
Have you checked all the rings? Some maybe marked better than others.

Had a close look at the top rings under magnifying glass and no visible marks.
Looking at the cross section of the top ring in workshop manual it looks symmetrical so phoned Yamaha flintwicks and they said if no visible marks it does not matter which way round it goes so will have to go with that. The oil rings have no marks on them either. The manual mentions marks on the rings but I have looked very close and no marks

make sure to refer to the manual to align the ring end gaps with the piston crown depressions, doing this properly and not shifting them during re-install ensures that oil will be scavenged correctly from the cylinder walls
