Alternator / Generator for FZR1000RU

Post by oldskoolexup »

(Apologies if answer is well known or previously covered)

What generator/alternator can/should be fitted to an RU.

What is best option for improved performance/longevity?

Cheers lads.

Thanks Rob.

The other options are YZF750 and Thunderace, as far as I have been lead to believe, but they appear to have different connector.

Are they different and if so can they be easily modified?

Hi again

Not sure about the other options, the FJ12 alternator is identical, leads and plugs are a direct fit.
The only difference was a silver ali cap bonded on the visible end of the new unit.
As a precaution I fitted a new diode at the front of the bike inside the front left of the fairing, cheap enough from Yamaha. I had a battery boil up caused by regulator failure previous to rebuilding the bike.
Not sure about the function of the diode, I'm guessing it is a Zenner of some type though judging by it's position out in the airflow. I had fitted a new regulator to the old alternator but I was still seeing higher voltage than I liked hence the change.
Cheers
Rob
