Idle speed at 2000rpm
Hi folks. I've asked this one before but can someone help.
My rev counter is showing 2000rpm at idle. It's not but thats what it's showing. I was told it would be a fault code saying the exup valve was seized. I've checked that and it's not. I've even looked for bad earths to no avail.
When I ride it the revs shoot up like mad. If I gun it they whip round and through the red line totally miss reading.
Any advice would greatfull

EXUP fault is error code 7 (ie; 7000 rpm with ignition on).
Error code 2, IIRC, is charging circuit fault. This could be simply that your battery is fubar or it could mean that the reg/rec or stator is on the way out.
Are you noticing it dropping onto 3 cyls at all? This sometimes happens with a drop in voltage.

Hi MMUK
I got the following readings and as it was a hot day the fan switched in and made no difference to the reading
ignition off 12.20v
lights off
ignition on 11.75v
tick over 12.60-70
6K (from 2000 shown tick over) to give 5k
13.80v
5k (as if at normal tick over)
13.80v
I checked twice the readings on the first test it showed 14.30 at 5k
but once it got hot it went to the above readings
The next test, lights on stayed the same warm or hot
lights on
ignition on 11.70v- slow drop to 11.57 then creeps down
tick over 11.70-75v
6K (from 2000 shown tick over) to give 5k
14.20v
5k (as if at normal tick over)
14.10v
I hope this makes sense
One thing it has shown I need to balance the carbs which is on the list to do's anyway.
Cheers
Chris

I've change the alternator complete as I don't have a soldering iron to remove the reg/rec.Its made no difference its still showing 2000rpm on tick over. I've an idea it may be the ignitor so going to dig out my french one and try that. If it does it then I'll look for uk one.

You've changed the stator? The reg/rec is a black box with a plug/socket arrangement, it's located under the rear side fairing on the subframe. It's a four wire plug. The upgrade isn't quite straight forward as you need to fit a new plug to the FZR loom and the R6 unit is 5 wire. All is not lost though, you just don't use one of the phases.

I'll have a look again but my bike is a 92-93 and according to the haynes the reg/rec is on the back of the alternator under the black cover. When I fleabay it the items they show are what are under the cover. Thats why I swapped the whole alternator over with my spare that I know works
