just about to purchase a new battery for the ru and talking to good mechanic mate of mine ? don't rate the gel battery for older bikes that the generators don't output enough for this type of battery . any one have one on there bike or any prob's with them . cheers :)

I have never heard that it should be a problem with gel batteries. There's also Lithium batteries which are much lighter and more powerful. More expensive though.

yes ive' 78 z1000 and others in the z1oc a few have fried the rectifier after about 3000 miles

im fitting one to the zxr400 road bike in a few days, its Ah is up from 8.5 to 10.5, and the CCA is up from 135A to 160A...shouldnt blow out anything i hope on a 20 year old bike.

Use of the term "gel battery" is akin to calling a motorcycle a "motorbike"and so demonstrates small knowledge.

What you need to choose is a VRLA/AGM [Valve regulated/Absorbed glass mat] battery.

Please feel free to research but otherwise I have studied batteries as part of my employment and also learned some hard lessons on the road using cheap current production wet "flooded cell" units in my 1969 Triumph 650 twin.

I only mention the Triumph because whilst all battery carrier vibration isolation mounts etc were in place it would shake your "Rocket" or whatever POS so that cell links seperated and then dead bike.

350 miles from home on a Sunday afternoon on one occasion.

Lead is expensive and Chinese batteries have little of it, plate surface area gives adequate performance initially but wafer thin plates and thin links between cells guarantees disappointment eventually

Anybody who tries to sell you a flooded cell motorcycle battery these days is ignorant and certainly has his hand on your wallet if he wants more than AU$65.00 for a flooded cell 14AH battery.

Odyssey AGM/VRLA batteries out of the US are the best there is and priced accordingly, not necessary if you have a budget as there are other good brands.

Be aware that terminal orientation is important, Yams seem to have the + and - terminals on opposite ends of the battery to common applications, there is not room to to change cables on the bike.

Charge rate concerns as expressed in one post above are groundless, even early YZF 1000 etc have adequate 3 phase alternators with excellent electronic charge control, the AGM/VRLA battery needs no more in than out compared to a flooded cell battery.

Efficiency is at least comparable.

Flooded cell batteries are cheap old tech junk, they freely vent hydrogen when charging and spew sulphuric electrolyte over the bike if overcharged.

Pleased to engage further if any are interested but would prefer that any with questions looked first at what information is available elsewhere.

well home from work at 4 new motobat arrived and fitted new plug's oil filter air filter fuel filter all fitted brake pads new done all cleaned new servo to exup cables fitted carb's cleaned all back together and wash bike finished
8.25 pm new fuel.....turn key pump run twice fired first time.???? time for new mot. and back tyre :) :) :) :)

I have been running a gel battery in my exup for about 4K miles now and not had any problems with it

to be honest i would not go back to using SLA batterys if there is a gel replacement one available the exup cranks over and starts a lot quicker with the gel one

take it that pic is for illustration as its only 7 ah ive just removed a 12 ah and fitted 14 ah :)
