Yep Fang, love these threads, the whole story line just gets better!
I think it was karma you falling off your postbike after you cannabised one one them
That 1st piece of welding looks like there was no shielding gas being applied, that's they way mine goes when the gas bottle empties, tho after seeing the bead of weld with the gasless wire I might get some when my wire runs done this time.
As I was told the only way to get good with welding is practise, practise, practise - even just welding scrap pieces of metal together.
I'm sure you've found THIS forum when doing your internet searches.

Never Ever Bloody Anything Ever!!!
Boredom set in, so thought I'd do some mock up shots.
Obviously going to re-do the headlight mount, and mount the clocks properly, but this gives the general idea!
Then I tried out the seat unit.
Doesn't look yoo bad I think, tho number plate mounting may be an issue, we'll see.
And I cant really get far enough away to check out the lines of the bike!
As its a bit cramped in here!!
Never mind, eh.

Though I'd better update again, still got the cast on so no work done on the beast, just toying with idea's
This is the can thats fitted at the mo
But I've had this kicking about for a few years, so may have to use it as I think the shape suits the lines of the bike nicely!
And this turned up the other day
Finishes the seat unit nicely
Just need a seat now!!

did you get the house extension completed?
I concur,it is asking for it, but I'll have to wait till I have the use of both hands for that one
As for the extensions, all finished December 19th 2008, all decorating done by mid 2009 bar the lounge carpet
and that went down 4 weeks ago
So now this is finished hopefully I can start playing on the bikes again!!
Still jealous of the size of yours though
(garage....you perverts )
Never Ever Bloody Anything Ever!!!
well smart and looks worth the effort.
as for mine....its still ongoing. Need to update the thread really but its lack of time in general.
The garage is at least done construction wise...just needs sorting properly and organizing. This year its the garden landscaping, drive to garage and orangery at the rear <big sigh>

AKA Bald headed b'stard
As mentioned earlier, it doesn't seem to matter how much space you have, you Will fill it with shite ( AKA stuff that might come in handy one day)The garage is at least done construction wise...just needs sorting properly and organizing
Oooo posh! This year its the garden landscaping, drive to garage and orangery at the rear
At least you have a nice space to retire to once the dark nights get here.
Never Ever Bloody Anything Ever!!!
Right, decision made.
I get Wednesdays off, and seeing as it was a nice day I thought, fuck it, get out there an do sommat!!!!
So armed with a cuppa, it began.
I have decided to make my own subframe, utilising the existing frame work on the bare FZ frame, as not happy about the strength the shortened ally R6 subby.
So to begin with I put the top half of the R6 seat unit on the existing frame to take some measurements and get the angle right.
Measured distance to the floor from a hole in the rear of the frame so I could work out how much it needed to be raised.
Turned out the frame needed to be raised by 120mm to get the angle I want.
Next I put a spirit level with an adjustable bubble on the frame rail so I can set the bare frame to the same attitude
cut a piece of waste pipe to the right length and stuffed it into the headstock, now the bare frame was sat at the same attitude it was time to take it outside!!
No going back now!!!
Now the idea is to cut the top rails down 3 sides, leaving the bottom intact and bend them upwards to the required hieght then reweld.#
after a little fetling involving cutting the "V" iy was time to check the angle with the tank and seat unit on.
looked good but the seat unit was being held high by excess subframe so out with the grinder again
Looking good without being ridiculously kicked up.
With lower half of seat unit attached
This is the look I was after, I know I need a lower brace, but now the bottom tray is on I can get an idea of how to do it,
Plenty of space to run a brace through this gap
and room for electrical gubbins underneath as well
Now that I was happy with the hieght of the rear it was time to weld it up, so out came my diy frame trueing jig LOL
Need to make sure its all level and not twisted during welding.
Had an old Exup RU subframe kicking about so that was cannabalised for brackets to make the rear seat mounts
Werent too happy with these so cut a couple of lugs of the Exup subby instead, and also attached mounting points for the seat unit.
At this point it started to rain so I put stuff back in the garage and called it a day.
Took longer than I thought but that was mainly due to me being extra cautious, measuring, test fitting, measuring again , test fitting, etc etc.
Started the ball rolling now, and this way as I transfer parts from one frame to the other I'll know all is well as I've put it together myself.
