Tickover trouble

My bike seems to have trouble ticking over smoothly. It will idle happily then revs suddenly climb to 5-6000. I have cleaned the carbs, made sure that main and pilot jet in the jet block are clean as a whistle. Air screws have been tried between 2 and 3 turns out but I still get the same problem. Th...

the relay has 2 blue and whites going to it. one from the solenoid, and the other to the start switch. As far as I know, when the relay operates, it basically connects those two together. If you short out those two by hand somehow - the start button should now operate. If it does - it proves all the...

Next step might depend on year of manufacture. if the bike turned over after the previous, then the problem is that the solenoid is not being connected to frame via the blue. I would drop the RH switch assembly off so you can see the workings of the start button switch. (2 screws) Both sides of the ...

OK, so lets eliminate things one step at a time. Have you had the solenoid disconnected at any point? The battery must be connected to the connection that has a little metal jumper connecting the thick wire to one of the little connections. There should be 12 volts on that little connector all the t...

When you press the starter button, is there any clicking from the starter solenoid? The solenoid is the round metalic device just behind the battery which has 2 thick red leads. A dirty trick is to short these two big connections together with a heavy screwdriver. DO NOT allow the screwdriver to tou...

Thanks guys - I will keep a lookout for a set. In the meantime I have now got a set of NGK plug caps to try.

Back old aircooled RD days I used to slather an obscene amount of silicone grease over everything. It used to work but Oh - what a mess.

chalk and cheese

Out of hibernation for a first proper rideout this year around the coast of west Wales accompanied by a venerable Armstrong MT500. Probably a good idea to get me back into the motorcycling habit after about 6 month break. It doesn't matter from what perspective you look at it - these two are definat...

Cheers Stig!

If I carry on fixing things at this rate - there is a real risk that I might end up with 2 EXUPs on the road simultaneously!

Misfire and plug cap changes

My 3LG had a bit of a misfire problem. Number 2 cylinder was firing back through the carb. Intending to swap over 2 and 3 which are driven from the same coil - I found that number 2 plug caps was broken a kindly left the remains of itself in the spark plug access hole. 20 minutes later and a careful...

I changed the oil today, and by turning the ignition on - I could see when the oil level light actually came on. I was quite shocked to see about 2 litres drain out before the light came on. When you refill it is a chance to spot when it turns off again. Unfortunately I completely forgot to do this!...

Foxeye headlight compatibility question

Does anyone know if the same foxeye headlights were used in the 1000 and 750 or any other Yams? I ve found out I have LHD beam pattern lights in my 1994 1000. I believe that I've got bloody Danish spec lenses in there at the mo..... Pah! Only became apparent when I drove the bulbs with relays to get...

Nobody told me this would happen!

Oh dear - I seem to have accidentally bought another EXUP. Does anyone know of a helpline or support group to help me deal with this terrible affliction? Or failing that a bloody good excuse for the wife! Just got it off ebay thinking I will have another for spares. Its a bit scruffy with a lot of c...
