Same as exopbloke, I did the stick conversion, I had no end of troubles with the bike idling badly and cutting out in the rain.

The conversion did the trick.

I had a friend who had a friend who had a furniture business that used to wash the leather sofas with a solution of Dove soap (for the dispenser) and water. Apparently the soap is very mild, as the adverts say, and don't strip the oils from the leather.

I can't remember exactly where I've seen the chart before for this that matches the numbers on the crank to the numbers on the crank casing. I think it might be in the Haynes manual, you end up with a colour code for the shell bearing needed for each bearing area. I'm not near my manual at the minut...

I'd something very similar happen to me, turned out it was the reserve switch was dirty so when I hit reserve nothing happened, the only way to get the bike started was to prime the carbs by turning the kill switch on an off before hitting the start button. When I got my EXUP many moons ago the front sprocket was welded on in the same way, until i got it sorted i had to grind off the old weld and weld on the new sprocket, all good fun!

Nope, Thunderace ones are USD and 43mm diameter, the 89 one are standard and 39mm iirc

I believe the gel batteries are smaller and have the same CCA or more than the lead acid batteries, they're often used in race bikes and custom bikes, worth a look at.

I recently fitted COP to my '89 EXUP (not RU) bike runs so much more smoothly now, even runs in the wet which is why I changed it. I used CBR600 COPs.
