Home Bargains (T J Morris) selling Unipart oils including Pro P 100 10/40 part synthetic, which may suit a few......£7.99 for 5 litres.... Not fully mineral but may be useful and 7 year shelf life......Any thoughts?

| If it meets the standards that is fine, I would buy it - only thing that might impact is if it is designed for cars - can mean clutch slip in bikes as the clutch is not separated like a car but for that price worth a punt |

As is often the case, there's often several opinions.
These are just a few...... and there'll be those who have others......
Some say old skool mineral 10/40 best as it helps to build a little residue and "seal". (cheap 10/40 mineral appears rarely now in favour of 15/40)
Others say semi synth but some engines will burn more off than with mineral.
Others say oil should be JASO spec so clutches don't slip but I've not had a problem on mine, certainly not topping up and if you burn the normal amount then it's going to get expensive with "top" quality oils.
I'm really interested in peoples experiences of oil but there doesn't appear to
be a consistent view or indeed a raft of views being expressed so either noone is reading or it's not of interest???!!
So to answer the question ..........it's the correct grade but is designed for cars with no wet clutch and it's semi-synth so there are more specific oils for the motor BUT they can be very expensive, particularly if you are burning a lot........I'll top up with it and let you know............but please, anybody have any strong views.....please advise!  as my opinion is very far from expert,,,,cheers lads and hope that helps Lukather

Not had experience of the mentioned oil
I run Rock Oil 10/40. I swapped to it when I first bought the bike. I was previously using a bit of oil but don't seem to have the issue since swapping
Not had issues with clutch slip and being as bike don't get serviced often the extra for the Rock Oil is worth the expense

Is it a particular type Stig.....i.e. do rock do more than one.......??? i'll try that too...

I'm using Motul 4T 5000 10w40 HC-TECH Semi synthetic. Not had any clutch slip as yet.

20/50 Mineral Oil.
Uses very little, other than the first 30 seconds after start up when you'd think it was running on logs 😆.
Bit of a weep past the valve guide oil seals but I'm happy to live with it. |

Is mileage high or just hardening or wear of oil seals, so far as you know?

A bit of both I'd say, it's done 54000 miles but spent time standing looking at the old mot history.
If I feel particularly enthusiastic one day I might whip the head off and sort it out-
but probably not. |

Absolutely none. To be honest these engines are a 30 year old design and mineral oil was the norm at the time.
As to the viscosity with UK conditions I don't think it does any harm either.
I've used it in my older (1980s) bikes for years and never had a problem. I did try semi synthetic in an early gsxr1100 and it used much more than the mineral.
All down to design/ manufacturing tolerances/ available oil technology at the design stage I suppose. |
